there is some way to create a multi-option option within the kibana input controls which can never be blank, that is, it can have several selections but at least there is always a selection.
seems related to Where is the control visualization directory (?)
is this a feature request? if so, I would make it in the Kibana-repo https://github.com/elastic/kibana/issues/new
