Upgrade Elastic Stack 6.3 to 7.2

Hello everyone,

I'm using Elastic Stack in version 6.3 (Elasticsearch - Logstash - Kibana - Beats) and I plan to upgrade to 7.2.

I followed the webinar presenting the best practices to upgrade Elastic Stack. I think I will execute this process :

  1. Upgrade Elasticsearch and Kibana from 6.3 to 6.8 in order to use Upgrade Assistant.

  2. Upgrade Elasticsearch and Kibana from 6.8 to 7.2.

  3. Upgrade Logstash and Beats from 6.3 to 7.2.

I have two questions :

  • Do you think that my process is correct?

  • Within the Logstash documentation I read that it was required to upgrade Logstash from 6.3 to 6.7 before upgrade to 7.2 because the _type setting changed from doc to _doc. I don't understand why is this step mandatory, could you explain me?
