We are using 5.1.2 version of Elastic/Kibana/Logstash & xpack & 0.4.0-1 version of logstash-forwarder.
We are planning to upgrade Kibana from 5.1.2 to 5.6.15(due to some security issues).Can someone please suggest if that would require us to upgrade Elastic,xpack,logstash & logstash-forwarder as well?? Or 5.6.15 kibana is compatible with prior version of those application.
I read somewhere that if Elastic version should be always higher or equal to kibana major/minor version.How about other application,Do i need to upgrade those as well and to what version.

You will need to updated Elasticsearch. Kibana will not start with an older minor version of elasticsearch. See https://github.com/elastic/kibana#version-compatibility-with-elasticsearch for details.
